What is the Metrowater Community Trust?

It is an independent charitable trust set up in 2001 and funded by Metrowater, but separate from the company. The trustees include members of the community nominated by the public and appointed by the Metrowater Board. The Trust’s mission is to support and assist low-income families and individuals, and individuals with special needs in relation to water use, to improve their ability to pay their water and wastewater bills through the implementation of water conservation measures and, in exceptional circumstances, monetary grants.

How Metrowater Community Trust can help

The Metrowater Community Trust has been set-up to assist low income individuals and families who have water ‘issues’. We support Metrowater’s aims in water conservation in Auckland, and enabling customers to achieve equitable access to an essential resource.

Some example of the ways the Trust has helped are:
  • Shared to separate meters. There may be an individual in a block of flats, the other flat dwellers being families. The water and wastewater bill will be split evenly by the number of flats and this may be unfair. If the individual is unable to fund the cost of installing a separate meter and the associated internal plumbing costs then the Metrowater Community Trust may be able to arrange and fund the installation. Having a separate meter means that the applicant would only pay for the water they use.
  • Water leaks. If a water leak is suspected, the Metrowater Community Trust may be able to assist by getting their plumbers to look for the leak and repair it. This work would be funded by the Metrowater Community Trust.
  • Plumbing Repairs. Dripping taps, hot water cylinders and showers all mean water wastage. The Metrowater Community Trust organise’s plumbers to carry out repair work, and pay the plumbing account.
  • Appliances. In some circumstances, the Trust may assist families by providing a washing machine, low-flow shower rose or dual-flush toilet where this may significantly help reduce water consumption.
  • Arrears. In exceptional circumstances, the Trust may assist with arrears payments and/or facilitate budgeting advice.
Requirements:

  • All applicants must complete an application form.
  • Proof of income is required (payslip, WINZ letter etc).
  • One months bank statement is required.
Help for customers with special needs

As well as helping customers in financial need the Trust may be able to help customers with special needs in relation to water use. If you use more water than other households because of a disability, health issue or other health-related circumstances (such as home dialysis, skin conditions, multiple births), we may be able to help.
